Wenger praises Arsenal fans’ influence
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised the club’s supporters for helping to inspire his team to an impressive start to the season.
After losing their first match of the season 3-1 at home to Aston Villa, many supporters at the Emirates furiously demanded that the Frenchman spend some money in the summer transfer window.
The result was smashing the club’s transfer record with the deadline day signing of £42.5 million Mesut Ozil, who has been on top form since moving from Real Madrid.
After defeat to Villa, the Gunners have been on a sensational run winning ten games in a row in all competitions and now sit at the top of the Premier League.
And Wenger believes that the atmosphere and support the fans have given the players has been a huge factor in their spectacular run.
As quoted by Sky Sports, Wenger, speaking ahead of their trip to the Hawthorns on Sunday to play West Bromwich Albion said: “When the team has confidence, they go into a game with a positive feeling and a positive attitude.
“The more you build that confidence up with the results, the more you go into the next game thinking ‘let’s just do it to win the game.’
“What is positive is that the team plays better when the environment is positive.
“We played in a sceptical environment last year and that does not create a great level of confidence.
“What has changed recently for sure is that our environment is positive, our fans believe in us again.
“That of course is very important if we want to be successful. I have said many times that I feel it is important for the team to feel that the fans stand behind the team.
“It is my job to make the fans happy. I feel I do that if they stand behind the team, because that gives you the feeling that they have done something right.”
The arrival of Ozil has certainly gone some way in changing fans’ scepticism of Wenger, who has been accused in the past of not splashing the cash in order to bring the best of the best to North London.
But the impact of the German playmaker, as well as free transfer Mathieu Flamini who returns to the club for a second spell, has breathed new life into the Arsenal team and has certainly lifted the spirits of the Gunners faithful.
