Three Key Battles: Liverpool vs Southampton
Southampton will come to Anfield with a clear game plan on Saturday.
Under Mauricio Pochettino, the Saints press the ball continually, making it difficult for the opposition team to move the ball about.
Liverpool fell foul of this tactic last season when they lost 3-1 to the Argentinian’s men on the south coast.
However, it is one thing to press an opposition side while playing at home, and at Anfield it will prove more difficult.
That is not to say they won’t do it, just not as high up the pitch as they do at St Mary’s.
When Southampton made the trip to Old Trafford last season, they did exactly that.
The Saints pressed United throughout the pitch and made if difficult for the hosts to play, despite the fact they lost 2-1.
Pochettino will therefore once again make his players chase and hound Liverpool throughout the park and will try and make it as difficult for the Reds to play the free flowing football Brendan Rodgers likes.
Liverpool also tend to tire in the latter stages of matches at the moment and constant pressure on the Reds may lead to late chances for Southampton.
