Saints need higher offer to strike deal
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins will need to dig deeper to sign his top transfer target, Davide Astori.
Adkins has been keeping tabs on the defender, but will have to make a better offer if he is to secure his services. The Saints’ initial bid of £8million falls short of Cagliari’s £12million price tag for the Italian centre-half.
Astori’s agent, Renzo Contratto, told Sky Sports News: “There is a big difference between the bid and the request of the Italian club, which is about £12million.
“If Cagliari were to accept Southampton’s offer, Davide would be willing to consider the proposal.
“He would have no problem going to play in a foreign league such as the Premier League.”
Contratto’s suggestion that the defender may be interested in a move to St.Mary’s will have put the club on high alert, it will now just be a question of whether the two clubs can strike a deal.
Astori has made over 100 appearances for Serie A side Cagliari since joining in 2008 as part of a co-ownership with giants AC Milan, he has also been capped by his country.
The Daily Mail has reported that Liverpool have also made a bid for the Italian, but they look set to miss out if the Premier League new boys can table a higher bid.
