Premier League defender set for Anfield switch

Reading defender Alex Pearce is nearing an exit from the Madejski Stadium and is set to complete a dream switch to Liverpool, according to reports.

The Daily Star reports that the 24-year-old is out of contract in the summer and could link up with former manager Brendan Rodgers, as the defender played under him for the Royals in 2009.

The Reds are set to lose Jamie Carragher in the summer as he will retire from football, and the newspaper reiterates that a fee would not be required for Pearce due to his current contract situation with Reading.

Current manager Brian McDermott admits that the club are unlikely to retain the Republic of Ireland international, especially with rumoured interest from West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City, according to the newspaper, the latter of which he had a loan spell with in 2008.

The English manager knows that should Liverpool come in for Pearce, then his chances of keeping him at the club would shorten significantly.

The Englishman had dropped the former Southampton player following a disappointing display against Stoke City earlier this month, and told the newspaper: “We will see where he will be in the summer.

“At this moment in time nothing looks to be signed.”

The Irishman could return to the side to face Everton at the weekend.
