Newcastle star’s relief at last-gasp victory

Newcastle United winger Sylvain Marveaux was delighted the club were able to clinch all three points in dramatic style against Stoke City on Sunday.
Penalty
It looked like the Potters were going to take the three points on offer at Tyneside themselves when Jonathan Walters scored a penalty to put the away side 1-0 ahead midway through the second half.
However, a Yohan Cabaye free kick levelled things up a few minutes later, before an injury time winner from Papiss Cisse ensured the Toon faithful could leave St James’ Park in jovial mood.
Relief
Marveaux himself played a big part in Cisse’s winner, coming off the bench to set up the Senegalese, which moved Newcastle up into 13th place in the Premier League and more importantly, nine points clear of 18th placed Wigan Athletic in the relegation zone.
The Frenchman told the Evening Chronicle, as reported by Sky Sports: “It’s a big step, it’s a big relief.
“It was very important for us – everyone is happy. We needed three points.
“The scenario of the game was good for us. We showed that we can be resilient, and that we don’t give up.
Ready
“We were in trouble after the penalty, but we found solutions.
“We just have to continue and play as we have been doing. And we have a big game again on Thursday, and then again on Sunday. We have to make sure we’re ready for these two games.”
Newcastle play mega-rich Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie in midweek, with the club looking in good shape to qualify having secured a 0-0 draw in Russia last week.
This Sunday the club then resume Premier League action with a mouth-watering tie against struggling Wigan at the DW Stadium, with a win surely securing their top flight status for another season.
