Midfielder reveals how Wenger persuaded him to join Arsenal
Mezut Ozil’s move to Arsenal from Real Madrid came about thanks to persuasive phone call from Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, the player has revealed.
The playmaker became Arsenal’s record signing after a £42.5million move on deadline day last week, which smashed the £15million fee paid for Andrey Arshavin in January 2009.
Rumours of a move for Ozil surfaced as Gareth Bale’s transfer to Real Madrid started to gather pace but the little German initially stated his desire to stay and fight for his place in the team.
But it was Wenger’s persuasive Gallic tongue and his vision of an Arsenal team spearheaded by 24-year-old Ozil that convinced him his future lay in North London.
Speaking to Die Welt, Ozil said, as reported by Sky Sports: “Somehow this telephone call just flicked a switch in me, I thought, what he is telling me is what I have missed at Real: transparency, trust, respect.
“He told me exactly how he sees me [as a player], how he wants to use me, what he expects from me and what he hopes I will contribute.”
Playing down the expectation and price tag on his shoulders, Ozil continued by saying: ”The transfer fee has nothing to do with me. I would have joined Arsenal on a free.”
One person who is in Ozil’s corner and is sure he will be value for money is his new Arsenal and international team-mate Per Mertesacker the report says.
The giant German defender is sure Ozil will prove to be a success and bring added quality to the team.
Speaking to reporters Mertesacker said, as reported by the newspaper: “I think he is worth what we paid for him.
“He is a phenomenal player and I think he has not reached his best at the moment.
“I think his contribution to this club will be massive.”
