Liverpool target £8m England defender

RichardsLiverpool are planning a summer move for unsettled Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The defender, 25, has already been targeted by Liverpool in January, with the table-topping Reds having a loan bid for the defender turned down by current club Manchester City.

New Deal

Richards, 25, has been with City for his entire career but has struggled for game time this season at the Etihad, despite his versatility, meaning he has only made 2 appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit.

As such Richards, who has 13 England caps, has rejected the offer a new year deal at the Etihad, which has made his exit from the club appear more likely.

City offered Richards a new deal because he one of their most versatile defenders, being very competent at either his preferred right-back slot or as a central defender, as well as fulfilling the home-grown player criteria, something moneybags Manchester City struggle to fill.

This versatility is what has brought the defender back onto Liverpool’s radar, with Brendan Rodgers keen to add the defender to his squad as they look to shore their leaky defence ahead of next season in which they will return to the Champions League.

City expect to recoup approximately £8 million for the defender who only has one year left on his current contract at the club.

It would appear that City are already resigned to losing the defender to Liverpool in the summer, with them tracking a fellow Premier League defender as a replacement.

Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna is out of contract this summer and so far talks have proven unproductive, leading to City expressing an interest in signing the Frenchman to replace Liverpool target Richards as well as providing competition for Argentine Pablo Zabaleta.
