Liverpool star sets fitness target

Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool’s injury-plagued Daniel Sturridge has declared he hopes to play a part in his side’s “nine cup finals” until the end of the English Premier League season.

Off the back of being named in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the striker hopes to show his worth by helping the Merseyside outfit in their bid to secure a European qualification spot.

Struggling

Despite struggling to remain match-fit since signing for Brendan Rodgers’ team in the January transfer window from Chelsea, the 23-year-old has bagged five goals in eight appearances and seems a fitting partner for Anfield main-man Luis Suarez.

Having returned to the side in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, it seems the forward is back to his healthy self – a status he hopes to make consistent.

“My fitness is fine,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“When I came back for the Tottenham game I trained for a couple of days prior to that.

“I didn’t feel as sharp as I could have.

“I’m not making excuses for not performing as well as I’d have liked to have done.”

Glad

He continued: “I’m glad the team won and I was happy to help the team.

“We’ve got nine games left and it’s nine cup finals in my opinion.

“I’m hoping to remain fit and God willing I can for those nine games.”

Liverpool face a trek to Southampton this weekend as they look to earn three valuable points which could take them above Arsenal, depending on other results.
