Liverpool step up bid for Frenchman

Liverpool are stepping up their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain striker Kevin Gameiro, according to the Daily Mail.

Brendan Rodgers declared interest in the striker during the January transfer window, the newspaper claims, and having learned of the player’s frustration at his lack of game time he wants to try again in the summer.

Following the big money summer arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ezequiel Lavezzi, the Frenchman hasn’t had much of a look in, and was reported to be ‘furious’ at being left out again last week.

The French international did impress in the Champions League last week after coming off the bench to set up PSG’s equaliser in the the second leg of their last-16 tie with Valencia.

He was however on the bench again for the weekend win over Nancy, only increasing his unhappiness having failed to nail down a start for the Ligue 1 leaders.

Competition

Gameiro is yet to complete a full 90 minutes for PSG this season, attracting interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs.

The Reds boss feels Gameiro would provide good competition for current strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, with Fabio Borini seemingly out of the picture at Anfield, according to the newspaper.

However, Liverpool will face competition in order to get the 25-year-old’s signature, with Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Valencia also keen, the newspaper claims.

Gameiro, who joined PSG from Lorient in 2011, is thought to be interested in a move abroad, increasing the speculation surrounding his future.
