Late Newcastle interest unlikely to scupper Liverpool’s move for Brazilian
The newspaper writes that Liverpool are “on the brink” of signing the winger, despite a late attempt from the Magpies to scupper their plans.
Willian has been given permission to leave the club after super rich Anzhi owner Konstantin Remchukov decided to cut the club’s budget drastically, the newspaper claims, with plans to sell the Russian club’s high earning players quickly.
Willian himself has publicly announced that he wants to try his luck in the Premier League, telling the Mirror: “If it is Liverpool, then they are a great club.
“The news came as a real shock, but I’m calm about it and hoping for the best, because I’ve been told they will help the players to go, if they get a good offer.
“I am hoping there will be something from Liverpool, because England has a league that I’ve dreamed of playing in.
“I think it would be good for my image. I would grow professionally in the Premier League, and it can be a showcase for me in a World Cup year.”
Liverpool are confident they will capture the 25 year-old, according to the Mirror, for a fee of around £15million.
The Reds have already added five players to their ranks so far this summer, including forward Iago Aspas and winger Luis Alberto.
Newcastle’s controversial director of football, Joe Kinnear, has been allowed to spend money this summer by owner Mike Ashley, in an attempt to avoid last season’s poor performance in the league when they finished 16th.
We can expect Newcastle to further strengthen this summer, even though they look set to miss out on Willian.
