Gunners to lose battle for Bayern midfielder
Arsenal had reportedly been the favourites to secure the Brazilian’s signature as he was made surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena.
The 26-year-old was eager to play regular football, and a move away from Bayern would have greatly enhanced his chances of playing for Brazil in his native country in the World Cup next year.
Gustavo even spoke of his admiration for The Gunners and according to The Guardian was reported as saying: “I have heard about the Arsenal interest. It’s a big club we’re talking about here so of course I’d like to play for them.”
But as talkSPORT reports, Gustavo will not be playing his football in the Premier League but will remain in Germany with Wolfsburg.
The German club offered more money than Arsenal and that was enough to secure the deal away from the North London outfit..
Gustavo’s failed transfer is another massive blow to Arsene Wenger who is in danger of failing to add to the signing of young striker Yaya Sanogo.
Having missed out on the signing of Gonzalo Higuain and the Luis Suarez transfer appearing to have stalled according to the broadcaster, Wenger risks the wrath of many Arsenal fans who are unhappy at the club failing to spend any money so far this transfer window.
The club begin their league campaign at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.
