Everton line up Moyes replacement

Roberto Martinez will stay at Wigan Athletic

Everton will look to Wigan manager Roberto Martinez to take up the Goodison Park hot seat if David Moyes decides to part with the club come end of the season, claims the Daily Mail.

Moyes is the third longest serving manager in the Barclays Premier League, behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, after taking over the reins from Walter Smith in 2002.

He has said he would decide his future at the end of the season but Everton might be preparing for life without the 49-year-old Scot who is expected to find a host of top suitors both in the Premier League and abroad with German side Schalke 04 the latest to show interest.

Talks

Moyes is expected to have talks with chairman Bill Kenwright about the way he would like the club to go.

He said: “The way I’m hearing the players talk, they are as ambitious as I am and probably a lot of futures hinge on where we finish and what we do during the rest of the season.”

Plaudits

Martinez has only just managed to keep Wigan in the top flight the last three seasons, but has won plaudits for his ability to put together a fine run of results towards the end of every season.

While his club are involved in yet another relegation battle, he has steered Wigan into their first ever FA Cup semi-final in impressive fashion by beating the Toffees 3-0 at Goodison Park last week. Their league form has also shown improvement in recent weeks as we head towards season’s end, just like in past seasons.

Martinez was strongly linked to the Liverpool job before former Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers was given the nod last summer.
