Europa League draw – English sides avoid each other

Premier League sides Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have avoided each other in the draw for the Europa League quarter final.

The first legs of the tie will take place on the 4th of April, with the return legs being played the following week, on the 11 April.

Tottenham vs Basel

Spurs very nearly self imploded in the competition against Inter Milan last night, only scraping through on away goals after a poor performance at the San Siro saw them lose 4-1 on the night.

They’re up against Basel, who will certainly be no walkover, but I’m sure AVB will just be happy to see Tottenham’s name in the pot after last night’s scare.

Chelsea vs Rubin Kazan

Just to make Chelsea’s congested fixture list even worse, they will have to travel all the way to central Russia to play a very in form Rubin Kazan side. Chelsea beat Steaua Bucharest 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last night, overturning a 1-0 defeat from the first leg.

Again, there is no guarantee that we’ll be seeing Chelsea in the last four, as they’re not exactly in form, and interim coach Rafael Benitez is under a lot of pressure from the Chelsea faithful.

Benfica vs Newcastle

Arguably, it’s Newcastle who are the team with the biggest task ahead of them, as they face off against Portuguese giants Benfica.

Newcastle narrowly avoided being taken to extra time by Anzhi Makhachkala last night, but a late goal by Papiss Cisse saw them advance with a 1-0 win on aggregate.

Fenerbahce vs Lazio

Italian side Lazio see themselves up against Turkish side Fenerbahce, in a tie which could go either way, with neither side being a pushover.
