Defender snubs four top Premier League clubs
Toby Alderweireld, former Ajax defender has decided to join Atletico Madrid on a four year deal.
The move was provoked by fellow-countryman, Thibaut Courtois who is enjoying his third season at Madrid.
Belgian defender Alderweireld was reported to have said by the Islington Gazette: “I wanted to sign for one of the best clubs in Europe. I’m happy to be part of this club.”
The Belgian international evidently rating Atletico Madrid above both North London clubs and league leaders, Liverpool.
Alderweireld was linked to City, however that gap was filled by Atletico defender Martin Demichelis, allowing the Belgian to fill the consequent space at Atletico.
According to the defender, he was persuaded to make the move after Courtois explained his enjoyment of his time at the club.
“He told me how great this team and its fans are,” Alderweireld added. “He advised me to come because he is very happy here”
Courtois is a Chelsea player but is currently spending his third consecutive loan spell at Atletico.
