Chelsea to invest Mata fee in defender

shawChelsea are planning to use the money they received for Juan Mata and spend it on Southampton full back Luke Shaw, reports The Standard.

Manchester United were set to make a bid for Shaw due to current left back Patrice Evra not replicating the form he showed last season, but Chelsea are set to hijack the move.

The Reds bought Mata from Chelsea for £37.1 million so it looks likely the Londoners will use £20 million of that to make a bid for Shaw.

The Saints are obstinate that none of their players will be leaving the club in the January transfer window but they may be forced to sell should a bid come in for their players which they simply can’t turn down.

Chelsea would obviously like to do the deal before the end of the transfer window on Friday, but they may have to wait until the summer to get their man if Southampton stay resolute.

Chelsea are looking for a left back after England international Ashley Cole has been out of favour with Blues boss Jose Mourinho recently, and they are currently deploying natural right back Cesar Azpilicueta on the left hand side.

It is believed Shaw would love to play for Chelsea after supporting the club from a young age and growing up in the London area.

The 19 year old enrolled at a Chelsea Development Centre in Guildford as a child, but failed to make the cut into the youth team.

In order to grab Shaw from under United’s noses, Chelsea may be willing to send Shaw back out on loan to Southampton until the end of the season.
