Chelsea alerted to target’s release clause

Chelsea target Marouane Fellaini has a reported £22 million buyout clause in his contract, news which has alerted some of England’s top clubs, according to the Daily Mail.

The Everton midfielder is wanted by a number of teams, but the clause which was inserted into his five-year contract in 2011 can only be triggered by a club who play in the Champions League.

The report suggests Chelsea are likely to be in the front of the queue to sign the midfielder.

The west Londoners are widely expected to qualify for next season’s Champions League despite a surprisingly early exit this term. But they will have to fight off some very strong competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Arsenal for a top four Premier League finish.

Fellaini has been in top form this season and scored his ninth goal of the current campaign in Everton’s 5-1 FA Cup win over Cheltenham on Monday night.

Chelsea would see him as an ideal replacement for outgoing veteran Frank Lampard who, according to his agent, has been told by the club he can leave in the summer once his current contract expires.
