Chelsea aces could face further European heartache

John Terry could face European final heartache for the second season in a row with Rafael Benitez looking poised to leave the defender on the sidelines for Chelsea‘s Europa League final against Benfica, according to reports.

Suspended

Terry, who was suspended for the Blues’ Champions League final last year, may find himself watching the game from the bench as Benitez says he will pick the team in which he feels is most likely of winning the final.

Terry has often found himself on the sidelines under Benitez’s interim management reign.

As the Express reports, this also means that Benitez is likely to drop the Blues’ other veteran Frank Lampard, who is still one goal away from equalling Bobby Tambling’s all time goalscoring record for the London club.

Selection

However, the Spaniard refused to get drawn in over his selection of the ‘old guard’ for the final.

He told the newspaper: “I cannot say anything about the final. We have to play another game and after that we will decide on the team.”

If Chelsea win their game tomorrow away to Aston Villa they guarantee their place in next year’s Champions League with a game left to play.
