Cardiff star tipped for England
Campbell picked up two second half goals as the newly promoted Bluebirds grabbed the headlines by beating the title contenders in the second round of Premier League fixtures.
City would have been confident of another three points when they went ahead through Edin Dzecko, away at Cardiff. However the home team leveled through Aron Gunnarsson before Campbell headed home twice from corners causing raptures amongst the home faithful.
Alvaro Negredo pulled one back to ensure a tight finish but Manuel Pellegrini’s men left empty handed, losing 3-2.
Campbell has had a disjointed career, beset by injuries but could prove very valuable for Mackay this season and even for his country. Speaking in the Express and Star Mackay was quick to compliment his man and believes a call up to the international squad is within Campbell’s grasp.
Malky Mackay has said:
“I thought Fraizer Campbell gave their whole back four problems today.
“He is someone I was delighted to get when we managed to get him in from Sunderland for £600,000. I thought it was an incredible bit of business on our behalf and he hit the ground running.
“He worked hard over the summer and I now think I have a player who has had an England cap and, over the piece, I think could force his way back into that squad if he keeps his head down and keeps working and playing like that against top, top players.”
Over at Manchester City, manager Pellegrini will be alarmed by the damage Campbell caused to his side’s makeshift defense, with Javi Garcia forced into central defense. City are facing an injury crisis with captain Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic and Micah Richards all out.
His side were far from solid at the back compounded by a under-par performance from goalkeeper Joe Hart.
But when quoted in the same publication, Pellegrini emphasised the need for the team to defend as a single unit from set pieces, saying:
“…defending set-pieces is the duty of all the team. Not just the goalkeepers and the defenders.
“It does not matter who is guilty with the two corners, conceding from two corners is too much, it is too important an area.”
