Arsenal set to spend big as transfer deadline draws nearer
Following the fan backlash at the end of their 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the Premier League season, the Gunners placed a £10million bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye on Monday, just hours before the Toon Army’s opening game at Manchester City.
That bid was seen as derisory, and was rejected immediately.
However, the paper believes that the North London club will come back in with an improved £16million offer.
The newspaper claims that Cabaye wants Champions League football, but would prefer a move to French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Following their 3-0 victory away to Fernerbahce in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, speculation has been mounting as to who Wenger is targeting with just over a week to go until the window slams shut.
The paper believes that as well as Cabaye, the Frenchman is also targeting Real Madrid pair Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria, Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and Valencia goalkeeper Vincente Guaita.
They’ve already had a £6million bid rejected for Guaita, with the Spaniards wanting £12million, the newspaper claims.
After missing out on top targets Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez, the club are desperate to add some star names to their squad to make them contenders for the Premier League title once again.
First of many?
The Londoners are set to resign Mathieu Flamini, who’s been back training with the club following his exit from AC Milan, the paper states.
The fans will no doubt be hoping that their former midfielder will be the first of many in the coming days.
