Arsenal set to move for Benfica star
The 22-year-old’s agent Juan Gabriel Appleyard, has told Costa Rican radio station ‘Radio Monumental’ that the defender has been in touch with the Gunners as well as Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
The broadcaster quotes Appleyard as saying: “Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete.”
The Paraguayan has been a common feature for the Benfica first team this season and recently extended his contract to June 2018, which contains a release clause of €30 million.
Coach Jorge Jesus converted Melgarejo from a winger into a left back after returning from a loan spell at Paços de Ferreira and it appears that is where his immediate future lies.
Melgarejo started for Benfica in the Europa League final defeat to Chelsea.
Should Arsenal be serious in their bid for the South American, he will provide competition to both Kieran Gibbs and January signing Nacho Monreal at left back.
The North London outfit have been left with money to burn after signing a succession of sponsorship deals with Puma and Emirates.
Wenger has clearly responded to fans’ wishes to spend money to improve the depth and quality of the squad, a long-standing criticism of the Frenchman.
