Arsenal increasingly confident of landing Chelsea target
Chelsea seemed to be in pole position for the striker’s signature but Arsene Wenger, who is under pressure to spend, wants Rooney as his top target.
New Manchester United manager David Moyes has told the media all summer that Rooney is not for sale and is desperate that he doesn’t join arch rivals Chelsea, who they drew 0-0 against on Monday night.
However, Jose Mourinho is understood to be preparing a new £40 million bid for Rooney and Arsenal think they have privately received encouragement that Utd would want to do business with Wenger’s men.
The Frenchman is understood to want four players before the transfer window slams shut on Monday night.
Arsenal fans have seen deals for Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez collapse while the club looked into the signing of Real Madrid and Wenger’s fellow countryman Karim Benzema.
Benzema’s team mate Angel Di Maria could sign for £25 million. If Gareth Bale signs from Tottenham, Di Maria will become a fringe player and the Gunners will open talks with Madrid over Di Maria today.
After a quiet summer, things are bursting into action as Wenger also wants QPR’s Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar after his initial interest went away.
Cesar was on his way to Benfica but the deal fell through due to the £70,000 a week wages he commands.
