Arsenal chasing Barca man

Arsenal are looking at signing Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 31-year-old will be a free agent at the end of next season, having stated his intention not to renew his contract with the Catalan club.

It is thought the Spanish ‘keeper would prefer a move to England, according to the newspaper, with Arsenal leading the chase for his signature.

Role model

Valdes has spent his entire career to date at Barcelona, lifting 19 trophies during that time.

He was in goal when Barcelona defeated Arsenal in the 2006 Champions League final, making two crucial saves from Thierry Henry before his side came from behind to win the match.

Current first choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is still thought of highly at the Emirates, but at 22-years-old he is still relatively young for a player of his position, and may benefit from an older role model.

Striking options

The paper also reports that Arsenal are tracking both David Villa and Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic.

The Gunners have been tracking Valdes’ team mate Villa for several months, but were unable to strike up a deal in January.

23-year-old Jovetic is one of Serie A’s hottest properties, but it remains to be seen whether Arsenal have the resources to complete a transfer for him.
