Arsenal and Chelsea to battle for Prem starlet

Arsenal and Chelsea are considering a swoop for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.

The Independent have reported that the two clubs are after the midfielder, who has been one of the most consistent Latics players in a topsy-turvy season.

Vital player

His ability and consistency for Wigan in the last three survival battles hasn’t gone unnoticed, and he would certainly add quality to most Premier Leagues midfields.

And as a result, he has gained suitors from up and down the league. Something that Billy Reid, the manager who gave him his professional debut at the age of 15, isn’t surprised about.

“I still don’t think he’s realised his potential yet,” he said speaking to The Independent. “That’s no disrespect to Wigan, I think he can go and play for one of the top teams in England.”

Early start

McCarthy endured a stuttering start to his career, before bursting onto the scene in astonishing style for Hamilton. He had spells at Celtic and Livingston but was rejected from both clubs, before he was picked up by Hamilton.

He then made his debut against Queen of the South at the age of 15 and won the SPL Young Player of the Year the season after.

The Irish international was picked up by Wigan in 2009, and played 19 Premier League games that season. He has played 35 league games this season, scoring twice and assisting two other goals.
